INFOGRAPHIC: The Umbrella Species Concept and Biodiversity Conservation

The Wek’èezhìı Renewable Resources Board (WRRB) is delighted to present a series of informative infographics created by Frances Stewart, a Canada Research Chair in Northern Wildlife Biology and Assistant Professor at Wilfrid Laurier University. These infographics, available in both English and Tłı̨chǫ, are based on her recent collaborative publications that offer invaluable insights into the forecast of boreal caribou populations across the Northwest Territories.

The following graphic shares information from an academic paper entitled "Will this umbrella leak? A caribou umbrella index for boreal landbird conservation." The umbrella species concept is when an animal like boreal caribou becomes the primary focus for conservation efforts in an ecosystem in order to protect co-occurring species like songbirds.
