WRRB Biologist’s Present Virtually to Students and the University of Wisconsin
April 30, 2021
The WRRB’s Conservation Biologist, Aimee Guile, and Wildlife Management Biologist, Laura Meinert, virtually presented to a master’s seminar class at the University of Wisconsin. The presentation focused on co-management and implementation in Wek’èezhìı as well as the experience of working within this system.
Aimee and Laura spoke on how the WRRB was created through the Tłı̨chǫ Agreement, where we work and the relative size of Wek'èezhìı in comparison to Wisconsin, the composition of our Board, as well as the kind of work we do. They discussed the importance of a balance between science and Traditional Knowledge with the students, how our meetings are conducted and input is gathered from the public, as well as different projects we work on. They stressed how important it is to ensure that the cultural values, knowledge, and ways of doing things for the Tłı̨chǫ people are central to the co-management practices employed. It’s always a treat for us to share with others about the important work being done here, but this was especially exciting to share with students so far removed from us. Great job Aimee and Laura! We hope the students were inspired by their presentation!
