Beverly/Ahiak/Qamanirijuaq Caribou Herds and Bluenose-East Caribou Herd Update
January 10, 2014
In May 2013, Environment and Natural Resources (ENR), GNWT, proposed re-opening a limited resident one-bull-only harvest of barren-ground caribou from either the Beverly-Ahiak-Qamanirijuaq or the Bluenose-East caribou herds, and submitted its proposals to the WRRB for its review.
On December 9, 2013, ENR issued a press release stating that a limited resident harvest for the Beverly-Ahiak herds was approved. Resident hunters are able to harvest one bull from the herds during the 2013-2014 hunting season. ENR also announced that the resident harvest of the Bluenose-East caribou herd will remain closed in light of new survey results which indicated a decline in herd size and in the number of breeding females.
The Board will review the report of the Bluenose-East caribou survey results as soon as it is available and determine an appropriate course of action.
ENR’s proposals and documents related to these proceedings are posted on the Board’s Public Registry at www.wrrb.ca
