Boreal Caribou Poster
October 15, 2012
A new poster that shows Tłįcho terms for discussing the anatomy of the tǫdzı – or boreal caribou-- is ready. It was produced as part of the Boreal Caribou Habitat and Habitat Use Project that the Wek’èezhìı Renewable Resources Board and the Tłįcho Government worked on last year.
An important focus for the project was documenting Tłįcho terminology as a starting point for sharing information and raising awareness of boreal caribou. Tǫdzı are an integral part of Tłįcho language and culture. The Tłįcho knowledge research team led by Georgina Chocolate and Allice Legat noted that knowing an animal is key to respecting it. It’s a resource that can be used in schools and Tłįcho language programs –and a way to link youth and Tłįcho knowledge about this caribou and the Tłįcho people’s relationship with it. It can be a great tool for youth to inspire youth in talking with their elders about tǫdzı and their importance.
