NEW! Tǫdzı Poster Updated

An updated version of a poster that shows Tłı̨chǫ terms for discussing the anatomy of the Tǫdzı (Boreal caribou) is now available.  To learn more about tǫdzı in Wek’èezhìı, the WRRB and the Tłı̨chǫ Government began the Boreal Caribou Habitat and Habitat Use project to document traditional Tłı̨chǫ knowledge of tǫdzı and existing scientific information. This poster was developed as part of that project.

An important focus for the project was documenting Tłı̨chǫ terminology as a starting point for sharing information and raising awareness of tǫdzı.  Tłı̨chǫ words for the plants foraged by the caribou were recorded as well as the different parts of the caribou’s anatomy.

Tǫdzı are an integral part of Tłı̨chǫ language and culture.  The Tłı̨chǫ knowledge research team led by Georgina Chocolate and Allice Legat noted that knowing an animal is key to respecting it.  The elders they met with described the characteristics of tǫdzı –physical features such as their long legs and thick coat as well as their behavior and secretive nature making them difficult to track and hunt.   Elders also stressed the importance of relationships and respect among all living things in the environment.

The poster is a resource that can be used in schools and Tłı̨chǫ language programs.  It can be a great tool to inspire youth in talking with their elders about tǫdzı and their importance.
