WLWB Update - Diavik Hearing

The Wek’eezhii Land and Water Board (WLWB) held a public hearing for Diavik Diamond Mines (2012) Inc.’s Type A Water Licence Amendment Application to deposit Processed Kimberlite to Mine Workings in December 2020. Because of the pandemic, the hosting of a public hearing looked a little different this time around. The meeting had limited space for members of the public to join in person at the Explorer Hotel, which was attended by the Board Members, Board staff, Diavik staff, and the Tłı̨chǫ Government. The three-day hearing was shared live via Cabin Radio’s Facebook page and the Land and Water Boards’ websites. Questions from the public were submitted either to an email address monitored by Board staff or to Cabin Radio via their Facebook page. Board staff could then respond or read into the record if it was a specific question to one of the presenters.

Supporting meaningful engagement with the public is an important part of the Land and Water Boards’ process. The opportunity for individuals to watch and participate in the hearing virtually resulted in a greater number of individuals and groups joining the event. If you are interested in watching the public hearing, you can still visit the WLWB’s website to view it, read the agenda, and get updates on other items in the Latest News section. You can also visit Cabin Radio’s Facebook page to watch the hearing if you missed it. If you are interested in this project, or any other that the WLWB is working on and would like to be notified when items are posted, please go to the Boards’ Online Review System to sign up.
